Dreamy Blueberry Almond Smoothie

Jump to Recipe

This blueberry almond smoothie has been my go-to for years. I hesitated to write it up because I felt like smoothies aren’t my thing. But who doesn’t love a good smoothie? Especially when it’s as easy to throw together, healthy and delicious as this one is. The main flavor notes here are blueberry and almond, hence the title. That said, it’s got lots of other goodies in it. Celery and spinach, chia seeds and hemp hearts, banana, a date, and some oat milk. It might not be the prettiest smoothie in the world, but it’s balanced and tastes great.

Should I buy fresh or frozen ingredients?

A little of both. I adore frozen fruit for smoothies. It’s beyond easy to keep on hand and you don’t have to worry about it going bad. It also enables you to omit the ice! There’s no greater smoothie sin than a rogue ice chunk, and this is a great way to avoid that happening. So for this recipe, frozen is perfect. I will say that I don’t buy frozen bananas. I’ve done it in the past but you just don’t get much for your money. Instead, I like to use half a banana at a time and then throw the other half in a freezer bag for later. I’ve got a huge frozen banana stash that I’ve accumulated this way and it’s awesome! They come in handy all the time.

Some of the ingredients you’ll have to buy fresh. Celery, for one. Spinach is available frozen but if I’m being honest, I prefer fresh. Chia seeds, hemp hearts, dates and oat milk (or the milk of your choice) aren’t sold frozen so don’t bother looking for them.

What about protein powder or additional additives?

I’m not a huge fan of protein powders. I just don’t like the taste of them. But if there’s something that you’d like to add (protein powder or otherwise), go for it. It’s a smoothie, it’ll be fine. I definitely recommend being mindful of flavors if you’re going to add something that the recipe doesn’t call for. For instance, I can’t say how chocolate would taste in this blueberry almond smoothie. So yeah, go flavorless or don’t blame me if it’s bad.
