Hot Buttered Rum with Apple Cider

Hot Buttered Rum with Apple Cider

Hot buttered rum is one dangerous winter cocktail. It’s comforting, tasty, and you can barely taste the alcohol. Which is ideal, in my opinion, as the taste of hard liquor has never been for me. This classic warm winter cocktail is pretty solid as is. That said, I have kind of an important question. Why use water when you could use apple cider? I mean honestly.

So I did what any reasonable person would do in this situation, and I made an apple cider version! And let me tell you, it’s good. Like, I’m never drinking a regular hot buttered rum again, good.

And because of the apple cider, it also works great as a mocktail! It’d be a little weird to drink a spiced butter compound with hot water, but swapping the water for apple cider has absolutely changed that. I actually served the mocktail version of this drink to a friend, and she loved it. So yay – something for everyone!

Hot Buttered Rum with Apple Cider

Equipment

  • Mixer or food processor

Ingredients

  • 1 stick Unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Ground allspice
  • 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Ground cloves
  • 1 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • a pinch Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp Dark rum (per drink)
  • 64 oz Apple cider (I used the honey crisp one from Trader Joe's)

Optional Garnishes

  • 4-6 Cinnamon sticks
  • Fresh cranberries

Instructions

  • Heat the apple cider in a large pot until hot (just how hot is up to you).
  • Put the butter, spices, salt, brown sugar, and vanilla extract in the bowl of a stand mixer or food processor. Beat or mix until combined. Note: you can also do this by hand, but that's definitely more annoying.
  • Add 2 tbsp of the butter compound to a heat-proof cup. Then add 4 tbsp of rum, and fill the rest of the cup with hot apple cider. Stir, and repeat with new cups until you've got the desired number of drinks. Add in any garnishes, and enjoy!

This is has to be my new favorite drink to curl up on the couch with on a cold winter night. Hopefully you feel the same way. If you make this, let me know what you thought in the comments or on Instagram! I always love hearing from you.
