Tahini Waffles with Chocolate Halva and Strawberry Compote

Is there a better way to start the week than with waffles topped with decadent chocolate halva and warm strawberry compote? If there is, I can’t think of it. Oh, and because you know I wasn’t about to give you a boring waffle base, I threw a bit of tahini and some more halva crumbles into the batter. The waffle was more complex than your average waffle, but not so over the top that it pushed the dish into dessert for breakfast territory. In fact, it complemented the halva and strawberry compote quite nicely!

So what is halva?

Halva is a Middle Eastern treat made of tahini and sugar. It can include spices, nuts, seeds, and other seasonings (I mean, did I mention that this recipe uses a chocolate version?), but at its core it’s basically tahini candy. It’s also got a unique texture. I’m talking crumbly and dense, but also kind of fluffy!

Anyway, if you haven’t tried it, you definitely should. I’m a big fan of Hebel & Co’s halvas. They’re an LA based brand that I discovered at a local farmer’s market a few years ago and have been obsessed with ever since. We actually connected recently and collaborated on a giveaway. The very giveaway that I teased this recipe with, in fact. I ended up liking my creation so much that I decided to do a full recipe post on them. So in a way we have Hebel & Co to thank for this delightful breakfast.

Equipment

  • Waffle iron

Ingredients

Waffles

  • 2 Large eggs
  • 2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups Milk (Dairy free milks work totally fine here!)
  • 1/2 cup Tahini
  • 8 tbsp Butter (Melted)
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 4 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 5 tbsp Chocolate halva

Strawberry Compote

  • 1 cup Strawberries (Roughly chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp Sugar

Instructions

  • Plug your waffle iron in.
  • Add the eggs to a medium sized bowl and whisk until light and fluffy.
  • Then add the flour, milk, tahini, butter, salt, baking powder, vanilla extract, and 1 tbsp sugar to the bowl with eggs. Mix until just combined, then fold in 3 tbsp of chocolate halva.
  • Now make your compote! Add the strawberries, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1 tbsp lemon juice to a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the it becomes nice and bubbly. Once it's bubbling, reduce the heat to medium-low and mash the berries with a wooden spoon. Continue to cook for 4-5 minutes and then remove from heat.
  • Once the waffle iron is ready, fill it with batter (I like to use a ladle for this) and close it. The waffle iron should release plenty of steam as it cooks. Once it stops steaming, check for doneness. If the waffles are nice and crispy, they're good to go. Remove them and start making your next batch (unless you have one of those massive waffle irons and can knock it out in one go).
  • To assemble, spoon a bit of strawberry compote onto each serving of waffles. Next, crumble some chocolate halva on top (that's what that extra 2 tbsp is for, though you can use more if you're like). Serve with maple syrup, or enjoy as is!

I know this sounds like a lot, but I promise it comes together quickly. That’s the beauty of waffles, after all. You don’t have to babysit them like you do pancakes. No disrespect to pancakes, but I relish an opportunity to be lazy.

If you end up making this, let me know in the comments or on Instagram! I always love hearing from you. Oh, and if you fall in love with halva, check out my halva latte recipe. It’s an absolute dream.
