Over the last couple of years, espresso tonics have become my favorite drink to order at coffee shops. It helps that not that many coffee shops offer them, so you know that if you see one on the menu it’s gonna be good. But I digress. If you have the ability to make espresso at home, they’re ridiculously easy to make. So let’s do it!
What is espresso tonic?
In its simplest form, espresso tonic is espresso and tonic water over ice. It’s refreshing and fizzy. If you’re into seltzer, you’ll probably enjoy it. While espresso tonic is lovely on its own, I love a fruity upgrade, so I’m a fan of adding a little bit of syrup or jam for flavor. That’s totally optional for espresso tonics in general, but very necessary for this recipe.
What about the jam?
For this recipe, I used homemade pineapple and passion fruit jam. It’s absolutely delicious and I highly recommend making a batch for yourself. If you’d prefer store-bought, though, no worries! Bonne Maman makes pineapple passion fruit preserves that you can totally use here.
Let’s talk ratio.
The standard ratio for an espresso tonic is one part espresso to three or four parts tonic water. This basically comes out to three or four ounces of tonic water and one ounce of espresso. But this is highly subjective, so feel free to tweak it. In this recipe, I opted for five ounces of tonic and a double shot of espresso, which is two ounces. I also add the juice of half a lime. For me, this is prefect, but your ideal ratio might be a little different.
